Corée, dynastie Joseon. Voyant que le roi n'a pas encore d'héritier, la reine mère prépare un plan machiavélique elle souhaite en effet remplacer ce dernier sur le trône par son jeune fils Seong Won, qui n'est autre que le demi-frère du roi actuel. Sans s'intéresser aux machinations de sa mère, le prince Seong Won tombe amoureux de Hwa Yeon, la fille d'un aristocrate. Il est cependant loin de se douter que le cœur de cette dernière est déjà pris par Kwon Yu, un ami d'enfance et vagabond de son état... Lorsque son père décide de la faire entrer au palais en tant que concubine, Hwa Yeon tente de s'évader avec Kwon Yu. Ils sont malheureusement vite rattrapés et pour punition, Kwon Yu se voit émasculé. Afin que Kwon Yu garde la vie sauve, Hwa Yeon accepte avec résignation d'entrer au palais. Elle devient ainsi l'épouse du roi et donne à ce dernier, un fils, jusque-là sans héritier... Cinq ans plus tard, Kwon Yu rejoint le palais en tant qu'eunuque et homme de main du prince Seong Won. Le roi meurt peu de temps après, victime d'un empoisonnement orchestré par la reine mère. Elle décide alors de mettre son fils Seong Won sur le trône et planifie parallèlement de faire assassiner Hwa Yeon et son fils. Hwa Yeon se sentant en danger, va tenter de séduire le nouveau roi en le manipulant ainsi que son ancien amant Kwon Yu... Entre manipulations et triangle amoureux, elle réussira à rester reine en épousant le roi Seong Won. Mais à force de trahisons et manipulations, tous s'y brûleront les ailes... Source
